Is weed legal in Madrid?

A clear, simple look at how Spanish law treats cannabis, and why private cannabis social clubs like The Ozarks Club exist.

In short

It is a bit tricky. Adults using cannabis in private are not penalised in Spain, and growing a few plants for personal use at home is tolerated. Using or carrying cannabis in public, however, can lead to an administrative fine, and selling it is a criminal offence. Cannabis social clubs exist so adult members can consume together in a private setting.

What it means for you in Madrid

At home or in private

Adults consuming in a private space are not sanctioned.

In public

Using or carrying cannabis on the street, in parks or in a car can be fined.

Buying and selling

Selling to the public is illegal. Clubs are closed, non-profit associations for members only.

If you are visiting

Tourists follow exactly the same rules as residents. Not knowing the law is not an excuse.

Why join a private club?

A cannabis club works only within its membership: adults who have been approved, informed and who accept the rules. That is the safe, discreet alternative to the street. At TOC you request an invite, show your ID and consume inside the club, in the centre of Madrid.
